Energy & Environment
Global warming has finally become accepted by the vast majority of Americans (as well as most countries around the world) as a very real phenomenon, caused at least in part by human activity, and one that will pose serious economic, health, and security challenges to future generations. There is little question that our current consumption of fossil fuels is hastening this process and must be significantly reduced as soon as possible in order to slow the damage being done to the atmosphere. In addition, our reliance on fossil fuels from foreign countries has place the Unites States in a vulnerable position and the recent dramatic swings in oil prices, while relatively short-lived, contributed to the economic crisis we are now facing.
The solution to these problems must be multi-faceted, and include large scale changes in our energy infrastructure, our public transportation systems, as well as our lifestyles. Every American is going to have to reconsider where they live in relation to their work, where they get their food from, how they power their homes, and many other issues. We will also have to reassess our energy consumption at home and at work, as conservation of energy will be as important to reducing our fossil fuel consumption as the development of alternative sources. While the federal government is making a sizeable commitment to investing in alternative energy research and development, it will be up to every community and individual to take responsibility for the local changes we can all make.
